A man wants to return to Rome. He cycles from the Alps, laden with luggage. He carries with him fears, anxiety, family problems: a labyrinth he needs to navigate. It is not an escape, but an encounter. The traveler aspires to find beauty in nature and art, to immerse himself in the history of the places he passes through on his journey along the Via Francigena—a pilgrimage route that united Europe in the Dark Ages—from the Great St. Bernard Pass on the Swiss border, through Piedmont, Lombardy, the Po Valley, the Apennines, Tuscany, to St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
