La Dama de las Camelias

A highly popular novelist and playwright, Alexandre Dumas fils (1824-1895) was born into a literary family and witnessed his father's resounding success as a novelist. However, he surpassed his father's fame during his lifetime, particularly in the theater, a genre he would dominate during the second half of the 19th century. "The Lady of the Camellias," the work for which he is best known, was a true moral shock in France at the time, as well as a resounding success with readers. The novel tells the love story of two young people, Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval, based on the famous Marie Duplessis and Dumas himself. This edition offers a translation of the first version of the novel, published in 1848, and includes passages censored by the author in later editions.
