The sudden death of all the Earth's animals has split the society of the Republic of Heden in two: the Celestials, the ruling elite; and the Domestics, inferior beings from the other side of the Wall who are used as slaves and forbidden from even touching or looking at the Celestials. Eva Salazar, daughter of the Minister of Food, leads a perfect life—or so the press portrays it as her upcoming wedding becomes a media sensation. What the media does not know is that the marriage has been arranged for political reasons to a man she does not love, and that Nina—the Domestic who raised her and whom she loves like a mother, despite the law—is to be abandoned to her fate on the other side of the Wall. It is then that Eva realizes that fighting the government of the Republic of Heden is the only way to bring justice to an oppressed and segregated society; and only members of the Liberation Front can show her that, amidst the horror of a world where animals no longer exist, there are still people willing to fight for freedom.
