El franquismo en tiempos de Trump

Fifty years have passed since the death of dictator Francisco Franco, and the new Spanish far-right party Vox is setting the public agenda and capturing the youth vote, in a global context shaken by the aggressive leadership of post-democratic authoritarianism. Francoism is fading from collective memory as if it had never existed, and at the same time, an unabashed neo-Francoism is gaining ground at the ballot box, imitating the clumsy methods and threatening rhetoric of figures like Donald Trump. It is a disturbing paradox. These neo-Francoists present the darkest past as an ideal society to be recovered. They recycle the remnants of the dictatorship and mix them with ideas copied from their international partners to offer drastic and exclusionary solutions, from legislative chambers, the streets, and social media.
