The Gospels are the most influential texts in Western history. They are also the most poorly read; buried beneath centuries of liturgy, doctrine, and cultural inertia, they have reached us shrouded in a patina that renders them nearly unreadable to the non-believer—and almost invisible to the over-believer. This edition seeks to restore them to what they always were: four urgent, strange, often disconcerting, and—in many respects—revolutionary accounts of a radical man who scandalized the powerful, redrew the boundaries of the sacred, and spoke words that no one had ever uttered before—words that, two thousand years later, remain untamable. They present scenes, voices, gestures, and encounters that continue to speak to us of the human essence and its unfathomable mystery. Accordingly, these four Gospels have been translated directly from Koine Greek—the living, vernacular language in which they were written—by C. Araujo and V. D. Báez, based on the critical text of Eberhard Nestle. Furthermore, this edition includes philological notes based on the Greek text, designed to clarify passages or concepts that may be obscure to the modern reader and to restore the true meaning of Greek words that canonical translations have fixed—and often impoverished or obscured—over the centuries. This is, therefore, a book in which certain words regain their original edge, their enigma, their narrative power, and their capacity to challenge us. Thus, for instance, a Jesus occasionally emerges who does not say or do exactly what we expected—or what we had been conditioned to expect. And that is a good thing—unless one believes there is something amiss in the full humanity of Jesus and the untamable radicalism of his teaching. Finally, this edition is illustrated with woodcuts by Eric Gill. These images possess an austere, deeply modern beauty; they do not merely accompany the text—they inhabit it. Thus, words and their visual representation engage in a dialogue within a composition that is at once restrained and vibrant, and the linework transforms the page into a delicate space for contemplation. The result is a large-format volume, conceived as both an object and an experience—an invitation, therefore, to read these texts anew or for the first time, with attentiveness, wonder, and freedom.
