Jacob Flanders is in his twenties. He studies at Cambridge, travels, debates art with friends in bars, falls for someone who—he feels—never quite sees his inner self, and tries to figure out what he wants to do with his life. The world around him rushes him along at full speed, yet he feels that no one truly knows him—not even himself. We do not fully see him, either. We see him through his mother, who writes him letters; through Fanny, who loves him in silence; and through his friends, who speak of him when he is not there. Woolf constructs Jacob just as we construct the people we love: from fragments, assumptions, and what we project onto them.
