Noche y niebla

This volume brings together the major dramatic works of Danilo Kiš, ranging from the bitter melancholy of *Night and Fog* (1968) and the biting satire of *The Parrot* (1970) to the emotional anguish of *Thomas Wolfe’s Wooden Trunk* (1974)—considered by many to be his finest play—and the sober irony of *The Mechanical Lions* (1980), an essential work regarding the Stalinist purges. These four pieces, while stylistically distinct, are united by a shared critical spirit; through them, Kiš explores the concerns that lie at the heart of his entire body of work: the fragility of memory, the artist's inability to truthfully portray suffering, and the tragic fate of the human being as a victim of the relentless totalitarian machinery of the twentieth century.
