After a train accident, Sorrell, a rational and modern English editor, finds himself inexplicably transported to 14th-century England: a world of superstition, rigid feudal codes, and belief in miracles. Inspired by Mark Twain's *A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court*, *Bright-Eyed Ladies* nevertheless becomes a genuinely Ford-esque work. As translator Belén Quesada Pareja points out in the afterword, Ford Madox Ford combines history, fantasy, and social commentary to create a novel that is as entertaining as it is unique, in which time travel also serves to confront two worlds, two ways of understanding life, and perhaps two ways of conceiving what progress really means.
