The latest case to land on the desk of Kristóf Kömives, a judge in interwar Budapest, is the Greiner divorce. Just another case, except that the woman's maiden name, Anna Fazekas, shatters the magistrate's unflappable composure. The carefree abandon of youth, a stroll by the lake, a captivating glance: the mere memory of those fleeting moments is enough to disturb, so many years later, the tranquility of his impeccable bourgeois life. And when Mr. Greiner arrives at his house with the news of his wife's death, Kristóf cannot contain the flood of conflicting emotions that engulf him.
