The Nobodies is a graphic research project that reconstructs the tragedy that occurred on June 24, 2022, at the El Barrio Chino border crossing between Nador and Melilla, where dozens of migrants lost their lives attempting to cross the Spanish border. Based on on-the-ground journalistic investigation, the work stems from a commitment to restoring dignity, names, and memory to those whom political and institutional indifference has reduced to mere statistics, leaving behind essentially anonymous inscriptions in mass cemeteries: a date, a number, and a mark indicating whether the body is that of a man or a woman.
Through the real-life experiences of survivors and relatives of the deceased—such as Moustapha, Hanin, Anwar, and Myasar—we accompany them on this pilgrimage of life undertaken by thousands of young Africans, crossing deserts, enduring persecution, and falling prey to extortion networks, driven by necessity. With a profoundly humanizing and critical perspective, the work questions borders, the violence of migration management, and structural racism, standing as an essential chronicle, a piece of our recent historical memory, rescuing from oblivion the voices of those who continue to fight for their right to life.
