An original catalog of beds that defy rules, beds on which children can sail the seas or reach outer space. Dining room bed, pocket bed, even an elephant bed! Being able to sleep in them is the least important thing. This marvelous poem remained unpublished for over a decade, so Sylvia Plath never saw it in print. In it, the American poet creates a world of playful fantasy around the corners of a mattress, offering a repertoire of beds in which children and adults alike can do nothing but postpone sleep. What is the origin of such an original project? Not even the author herself knew, but she enjoyed finding out: "From a long list of beds that were too outlandish, ingenious, and abstract, I chose ten, started writing, and couldn't stop."
