Originally published in German in 1957, this work stems from a wound in Sándor Márai's life: his break with the communist regime in 1948 and his final departure from Hungary. In Naples, amidst the postwar ruins and the enduring power of an age-old religiosity, he found a city where misery and an indestructible vitality intertwine; there, in a foreign land, this condition of being an outsider gave rise to *The Miracle of San Gennaro*, a novel permeated by his questions about history and the dignity of the individual in the face of totalitarianism. When he is found dead at the foot of a cliff, the investigation and his partner's confession reveal that his end was not a simple suicide, but an extreme act of defiance against the masses and the bureaucracy. More than a chronicle of a miracle, this is a novel about geographical and existential exile and about the moral resilience of the individual in times of collapse. Naples appears here not only as a setting, but as a living, contradictory, and proud conscience.
