Franca Jarach disappeared at the age of eighteen in Buenos Aires and became one of the thousands of disappeared during the Argentine military dictatorship. Who was she, and what happened to her? When she was kidnapped on June 25, 1976, Franca was living a peaceful life with her parents, Vera and Giorgio, Italian Jews who had sought refuge from the racial laws. She was a brilliant student, the only child of a cultured family. She wrote poetry, played music, and painted. She worked as a graphic designer, wanted to be a teacher, and was involved in politics. But political participation in Latin America during Operation Condor could mean a death sentence. A book, a song, or a whisper under torture was enough to systematically persecute and eliminate the opposition without a trace. And that was Franca's fate, one more story among the 30,000 disappeared after Argentina's 1976 military coup. Carlo Greppi meticulously reconstructs Franca's short life through photographs, documents, letters, and interviews. He also tells the story of Vera: a courageous mother who transformed her search for the truth into a collective struggle alongside the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, who demanded justice for all the disappeared. After seven years of investigations, false leads, blackmail calls, and appeals, a first glimpse of the truth would eventually lead her to piece together what happened to her daughter Franca.
