Diario bizantino : Poesía 1945-1977

"Byzantine Diary" is the title of a poem by Cristina Campo in which her lyrical creation reaches its finest expression. Her experience with the Orthodox liturgy at the Collegium Russicum church in Rome, along with a profound understanding of it gained from studying books such as those by Father Irénée Hausherr, opened up her creative possibilities, culminating in this text of absolute originality, unique in modern poetry. She is the author of the famous phrase: "I have written little and would have liked to write even less," and all her work, from "Paso de adiós" (Farewell Step), which she began writing in 1945, to her last poems before her early death in 1977, breathes a particular spirituality, built upon a careful and intense reading of authors such as T. S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, Emily Dickinson, and classics like Saint John of the Cross. However, it was Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Simone Weil who were the two guiding lights that illuminated her life and literary career.
