A latent emotion struggles to crack the icy, silent, dreamlike, and brutally realistic atmosphere that envelops these twenty stories. While some tales are beautiful homages to Oliver Sacks, Joseph Brodsky, and Ingeborg Bachmann, others establish a whispered dialogue with animals —a cat before its prey, a fish in a restaurant aquarium— or with objects: sculptures, portraits that take on an apocryphal life, a cursed mandrake root... Finally, other stories depict the fates of perverse or tragic characters, threatening or helpless: the last scion of a declining lineage; a young woman obsessed with a disturbed friend; or a blind girl who becomes a guide on a tour of Auschwitz.
