Fire, along with labor, has been the element that has most influenced humankind's relationship with nature. Both factors have shaped the development of civilizations through activities such as cooking food and hardening tools, and have gone hand in hand to foster great social and economic revolutions. We can say that our history is one of the diverse uses of fire. However, driven by its uncontrollable ambition, humankind has used it to indiscriminately destroy its own resources. Peter Sloterdijk believes that, given that modern humanity is a collective of arsonists who set fire to forests and underground deposits of coal and oil, Prometheus would surely regret his gift if he returned to Earth today, as it has become a threat of planetary destruction. This catastrophe, he asserts, can only be prevented by a new "energy pacifism," that is, the use of "peaceful" methods and approaches to energy production.
