Andalusia, 1937. The Carranza column, composed of horsemen, bullfighters, Falangists, landowners, and Civil Guards, advances through the northern mountains of Seville toward Huelva, led by the Marquis of Huerta de Soto, subjugating everything in its path and drenching the land in blood, like death riding across the fields. A group of women—wives, mothers, and neighbors of those who have fled or been persecuted—guided by Trinidad, the Camacha, are initiated into the dark language as a form of resistance and form a coven with the aim of healing the land, fighting in the war, and restoring life to a barren country with the help of its dead and ghosts.
