Milwaukee, 1932. In the midst of the Great Depression, with Prohibition's repeal imminent and Al Capone in prison, Hicks McTaggart, a former strikebreaker turned private investigator, thinks he's found a secure job until he's assigned what should be a routine case: locating and rescuing a wealthy Wisconsin heiress. Soon after, McTaggart finds himself, without knowing how, aboard an ocean liner bound for Europe, ultimately ending up in Hungary, where, of course, there's no sign of the runaway heiress. Hicks will have to contend with Nazis, Soviet agents, British counterspies, swing musicians, mentalists, and paramilitary groups, as well as the problems each of them brings, none of which he's equipped to handle. Caught in a plot he doesn't understand, and from which he sees no way in or out, the only positive thing for Hicks is that he's living through the dawn of the big band era and, by chance, he's a pretty good dancer. Whether that will allow him to return to Milwaukee and to the normal world, which may no longer exist, is another matter entirely.
