Edward O. Wilson, one of the world's most renowned scientists and a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, takes us on a journey from Mozambique to New Guinea, through the forests of Alabama and his parents' overgrown backyard, to thrillingly recount his nine decades of scientific passion for the more than 15,000 existing ant species. Combining scientific observations with illuminating personal anecdotes, Wilson selects twenty-five ant species to show us how these genetically superior creatures speak, smell, and taste, and, above all, fight for dominance. He describes a female-based social structure in which "males are little more than sperm missiles" and explains the violent battles that take place between colonies, whose main objective is the extermination of the enemy.
