At the end of the 19th century, Haggard placed Allan Quatermain, the elephant hunter, in the partly unexplored lands of Africa, embarking on a perilous journey in search of the wondrous mines of King Solomon. A succession of dangers, posed by nature, wild animals, and the natives —who do not understand the white man's idolatry of precious stones— will stand in his way. From all this arises an essential question: whether materialistic, money-obsessed "civilization" is not, at its core, more savage than these warlike tribes lost in the heart of the jungle.
