All her life, Ela has lived, quite literally, in her mother's shadow. Her father was convinced that her mother's large frame was responsible for the family's misfortune. Now an adult, Ela finds herself consumed by her own body, her ailing body, which fills her with despair. On the verge of completing her doctorate, she suffers a breakdown. As she grapples, without fully realizing it, with the question of whether she truly deserves her place in academia, her body rebels: her throat, her heart, her skin; Ela burns and sinks ever deeper into panic.
