Armed with a sharp and witty intelligence and a rich, elegant, and subtle style, the Venezuelan Teresa de la Parra (Paris, 1889–Madrid, 1936) is among the most interesting and celebrated Latin American writers of the last century. A witness to turbulent times both within and outside her country (her father was a diplomat and she received a thorough international education), she quickly captured the attention of her contemporaries with the publication of 'Ifigenia. A delightful book, which she herself stated she wrote with the intention of achieving a simple and innocent language, one that carried within it "something of mockery, of subtle irony, of laughter…," and which, through the figure of its protagonist, paints a delicate psychological and social portrait of Caracas high society at the beginning of the 20th century.
