On February 6, 2025, Morante de la Puebla wept in a corner of Las Ventas during the San Isidro presentation. Electroshock therapy for treatment-resistant depression with dissociative episodes had caused him memory loss. The season was a month away. In January, after a five-month hiatus due to his mental illness, and in the cold, rural silence of southern Portugal, he had tested himself against a fighting cow. The result was disappointing, devastating. Everything suggested he wouldn't even get started. However, he managed to reach his first bullfight of the year and delivered the most resounding and moving season of his life, an artistic and human feat against all odds. A stark exercise in overcoming adversity that also prompts reflection on mental health in the closed world of bullfighting.
