Christmas Eve, 1617. A storm rages over the Norwegian island of Vardø as the men of a small village are out at sea fishing. They all perish. From that moment on, Vardø becomes an island of women, among them Maren, who must cope with the deaths of her father, her brother, and her fiancé. The women of the island try their best to move forward, but soon news reaches the authorities. Eighteen months later, a sinister figure arrives on the island from Scotland to put an end to the women's unusual rule: Commissioner Absalom Cornet. Traveling with him is his young wife, Ursa, who sees in Maren something she has never known: an independent woman. A relationship blossoms between them that will change everything. But for Absalom, Vardø is the home of a terrible and dark evil, one he must eradicate at all costs.
