Mrs. Dalloway recounts a day in the London life of Clarissa, a high-society lady married to a Conservative MP and mother of a teenage daughter. The story begins on a sunny morning in 1923 and ends that same evening, as the guests begin to leave a party at the Dalloway mansion. Although a tragic event occurs during the day—the suicide of a young man who returned from the war psychologically disturbed—the essence of the work lies in the fact that the events are narrated from the characters' perspectives, with language capable of depicting the meandering, elusive rhythms of consciousness and expressing the condition of women in a way that is both intimate and objective.
