"Spirit of the Letter" exemplifies Ortega's skill as a literary critic, a practice he had engaged in since his youth, using it to refine his philosophical ideas. These ideas were captured in the galley proofs of the newspaper after his customary writing of working notes as he read. The book, published in Revista de Occidente in 1927, contains thirteen reviews that had previously appeared as newspaper articles, mostly in El Sol. We have supplemented the monograph with essays related to literary criticism, on the works of authors in other languages ​​and those of some of the most important members of the Generations of '98 and '14, as well as other essays written as prologues, on the book industry and the librarianship.
