Catie Carlson, a young Taiwanese-American woman, has never quite fit in with her white family. Although she loves her stepmother and stepsister dearly, she longs to better understand her culture and find her birth mother. So, Catie is shocked when an unexpected opportunity arises: Toby, her summer coworker at a spa, offers to teach her Mandarin. In return, she'll teach him how to flirt so he can finally muster the courage to ask out the girl he likes. The only problem is, Catie has no dating experience. But she can fake it. With her late father's annotated copy of The Five Love Languages, Catie becomes the perfect love coach. Or so she thinks. As she gets dangerously close to Toby and the truth about what happened to her birth mother, she discovers that learning the language of love can be far more difficult than she ever imagined.
