The Spheres Trilogy is undoubtedly Peter Sloterdijk's magnum opus. It begins by invoking the senses, sensations, and the understanding of what is close at hand; that which philosophy often overlooks: lived and experienced space, the primary experience of existence, for we live in environments, in atmospheres, in spheres; from "the enclosure in the mother" —the primordial sphere— all human living spaces are but reminiscences of that original, ever-yearned-for cavern. Sloterdijk analyzes the connection between life crises and failed attempts to create habitable spaces; he examines the catastrophes that occur when a sphere bursts, as happened with the Copernican revolution, which shattered the imaginary roofs of the sky under which human beings had lived for centuries. The Modern Age also begins with a new experience of space, with the horror that Pascal felt at "the eternal silence of infinite spaces." With great literary talent, erudition, and brilliance, Sloterdijk develops a new kind of phenomenology and ontogenesis of human spaces, tracing their adventurous twists and turns through the imaginary of history, art, literature, pop music, mythology, patristics, magnetopathic medicine, analytical psychology, mysticism, philosophy… If Heidegger had begun the search for a language for lived space, as Safranski says, “it is no exaggeration to say that Sloterdijk has raised the philosophy of coexistence in common space to a completely new level,” from intimacy to social macrospheres.
