Bitter Christmas presents two alternating stories. The first begins in December 2004, during the long Constitution Day weekend, and stars Elsa, an advertising director, along with her boyfriend, Bonifacio, and her friends Patricia and Natalia. The second takes place in 2026 and its protagonist is Ra煤l, a screenwriter and director immersed in writing a screenplay: we soon discover that it is Elsa's story. She is, in a way, Ra煤l's alter ego, who resorts to autofiction as a solution to a long period of creative drought. He looks inward, and cannot help but also look at the people who make up his inner circle: his partner and his assistant. This edition contains, in addition to the film's screenplay, an appendix with commentary on its creative process and filming, written by Almod贸var himself. It is also lavishly illustrated in full color with film stills, behind-the-scenes images, and storyboard excerpts, and concludes with a beautiful and personal epilogue by Gustavo Mart铆n Garzo. Bitter Christmas is a book that serves as the perfect companion to the film and will appeal to all lovers of cinema and culture.
