Once upon a time, in a ruined world filled with flesh-melting oil geysers, poisonous mud, and suffocating plastic tornadoes, a boy and a girl met. Maceo had never met anyone like Mezzy. In fact, Maceo had never met anyone at all, having been forced to grow up alone in his (radioactive) sea tower. However, when Mezzy—a girl hardened by the wasteland—happens to wander into his lair, Maceo decides to accompany her into this terrible and brutal wasteland, all the while continuing to create the inventions he hopes will improve the world. As Mezzy battles the secrets of her past—and a relentless horde of organ-eating rats—the unlikely pair discover the beauty and wonder hidden within the decay and decay of the apocalypse.
