Monica Tsai spends most of her days programming an app that connects strangers. A self-confessed loner, she takes refuge in a digital world while counting down the days until she can return home to her beloved grandparents. Now in their nineties, Monica worries constantly about them, especially her grandmother Yun, whose memory has begun to fail. For this reason, Monica sets out to find Meng, the cousin Yun lost long ago, before it's too late. In her search, she contacts a young archivist who gives her a pencil containing a clue to a hidden family history. Through this discovery, Monica begins to learn about the years her grandmother spent in Shanghai, working at the Phoenix Pen Company. When World War II erupted on their doorstep, Yun and Meng acquired a unique power inherited by the women in their family: the ability to retrieve stories through the pencils with which they were written. However, when government officials discovered their secret ability, they were both forced to lead a life of espionage and uncover other people's stories in order to survive.
