The people of Virúa eke out a living by raising livestock in the windswept highlands of a world ravaged by an ancient war. For Virúa, the future is predetermined: marriage and the continuation of her people's unchanging traditions, which include the prohibition of books and the duty of forgetting. But in the gale-battered highlands, haunted by monstrous creatures from the past, Virúa will make a startling discovery: mysterious ruins that glow incandescent before her closed eyes and house the buried remnants of an ancient power. In the devastated halls of the fortress, the desiccated mummies of a forgotten civilization guard a library that preserves their knowledge.
