Randolph Carter dreams three times of a majestic city that at dusk shines with the golden sparkles of the western light. He glimpses walls, temples, colonnades and bridges of veined marble, fountains with silver cups and jets that adorned large squares and perfumed gardens... But each time he is abruptly torn from sleep just before entering the interior of the brilliant city of the setting sun to learn its secrets. He then asks the gods of the dream to let him know the whereabouts of the mysterious city, but they do not respond, and perhaps they punish him for his daring by denying him access to his vision again. Without any fear, Carter decides to travel to Kadath, the home of the gods, to plead with them in person. However, no human being has ever been to Kadath and no one knows how to get there...
