In 1771, the Spanish crown extended its vast dominions across the Atlantic, ruling the largest empire of the era. These were times of splendor, but also of darkness. At just eighteen, Jaime left Menorca, occupied by the British, to study navigation in Barcelona. He wanted to fight them in the Caribbean, alongside the forces of Charles III, and thus avenge the harm the English had done to his family. Meanwhile, in Madrid, Almudena found herself in a desperate situation following the repression that followed the Esquilache Riots. When they both met in the capital, she begged Jaime to help her escape. The young man, captivated, agreed even knowing that Almudena was married and that saving her could condemn him. Together they embarked on a thrilling and perilous journey from Cádiz to Havana, and into the fight for American independence, all while trying to suppress a love as inevitable as it was forbidden.
