Rudin

Idle landowners and talented young men gather at the summer house of the illustrious and wealthy widow Daria Mikhailovna Lasunskaya. The arrival of one of these young men, all eloquence and persuasion, for a visit that stretches into a stay of several months, elicits a wide range of reactions from the regulars, from utter contempt to passionate devotion. Amid this tense and contradictory atmosphere, Turgenev crafts in Rudin (1856), his first novel, a splendid portrait of the "superfluous man," the brilliant mediocrity, a figure already explored by the author in earlier stories, inspired by Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, and who would eventually become a prototype of 19th-century Russian literature. A Hamlet-like hero, trapped between his talent and his inadequacy, Rudin embodies not merely the classic conflict between word and deed, but between empty words and those that can only tragically acquire meaning.
