The Misses Morkan’s annual dance at their Dublin home was always a major event. However, the underlying theme of this story is not the Christmas celebration, but death. The death of loved ones prompts the characters to reflect on their lives—Gretta Conroy, in particular. Her husband, Gabriel, experiences a bitter revelation at the end of the story, embodying one of Joyce’s celebrated epiphanies. This edition is distinguished by illustrations by Emilio Urberuaga.
