Iris Gray knows that witches aren't welcome in most towns. When she was forced to leave her last home, she had to leave behind her father, who was no longer willing to start over. And although the Witches' Council handed down a lenient punishment, Iris knows she is being watched. Now settled in Washington, she never lets anyone see her true self; instead, she vents her frustration by writing curses she never intends to use. Otherwise, she spends her days at a wildlife rehabilitation center—a job that would be perfect if not for Pike Alder, an aspiring ornithologist intern who hates witches. Iris concocts the perfect curse for Pike: one that will turn him into a witch. But just as she is about to dispel the spell, a bird steals it and flies off. The problem is that the bird acts as a powerful amplifier; if it dies, the curse will be unleashed, affecting not just Pike but everyone in the region. New witches have no idea how to control their magic, and the consequences would be disastrous. Furthermore, the Witches' Council frowns upon repeat offenders; if they found out, Iris could be stripped of her magic forever. So, she begs Pike to help her track down the bird, and together they embark on a journey across the Pacific Northwest in search of the creature that could destroy everything.
