The ancient city of Troy has endured a decade-long siege by the mighty Achaean armies, who remain at war over an abducted woman: Helen. In the Greek camp, another woman watches it all unfold as she waits to see which side will prevail: Briseis. Achilles—the greatest Greek warrior—sacked her city, killed her husband and brothers, and made her his concubine. As a prize of war, the young woman must adapt to survive a life unlike the one she had known: the existence of captive women serving the Greek army. When Agamemnon, the king commanding the Greek forces, demands Briseis be handed over to him, she finds herself caught between the two most powerful Achaeans. In protest, Achilles refuses to fight, and the Greeks begin to lose ground to the Trojan enemy. Briseis does not flinch in the face of the daily horrors of war. From a vantage point no one else has ever held, she observes the two men leading the Greek troops as they head toward their final confrontation—a clash that will determine not only Briseis's fate but also the future of the ancient world.
