March 1941. Joseph Gunner, a Scottish ex-policeman of Swedish descent, returns to Glasgow after being wounded while fighting in France. His former boss, Drummond, convinces him to help investigate the discovery of a body in the rubble of a bombed-out building. This is at a time when the Luftwaffe is rampantly attacking the city's shipyards and factories. When the body turns out to be that of a German, mutilated to conceal his identity, things become complicated. Meanwhile, several agents of the British secret service have arrived in Glasgow. With their help, Gunner uncovers a plot by a faction of the British establishment to end the war, a plot connected to the mysterious landing in the area of ​​Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy. Gunner understands that the future of Great Britain hangs in the balance. But intervening could cost him his life.
