Poesía (Obras completas 5)

This volume of the Complete Works of Luis Martín-Santos brings together the author's poetry, revealing a surprisingly novel and multifaceted voice within the poetic landscape of postwar Spain. This poetic corpus is presented in several sections: a group of "Early Poems" published in school magazines; Grana gris, published in 1945, which collects his early poetry; the previously unpublished books Las voces and Amor. Verano 1948, which bring together some of the poetry written between 1945 and 1948; and, in "Various Poems," around one hundred poems of varying dates that extend into the 1950s and perhaps the early 1960s. Finally, the "Appendix" presents some poems or fragments of poems that have a complementary meaning. All of this forms a fundamental, necessary, and until now almost entirely unknown corpus for understanding the creative work of Luis Martín-Santos. The poetry of Luis Martín-Santos opens an essential vein for understanding his work and reveals a very conscious evolution from a poetics indebted to Modernism and late Symbolism, with a gaze toward the classical world and the Spanish Baroque tradition, to a critical voice close to Realism or the low realism he would define with Juan Benet, with clear existential undertones, passing through a poetry of philosophical origin in many cases, with a profound desire for knowledge, often overflowing with imagination, sometimes complex and at other times ironic. If there is one trait that can unify Martín-Santos's poetry, it is undoubtedly the incessant search for the "beauty of the world" embodied in the poetic word; a beauty that is synonymous with truth, but also with consciousness and life. For the reader of Martín-Santos's work, reading his poetry will reveal one of the least known facets of his literary production.
