Nocturno de Venecia

The year is 1899. On the cusp of the new century, English writer Evelyn Dolman marries Laura Rensselaer, daughter of an American oil magnate. Dolman is confident they will inherit a considerable fortune and lead a comfortable and stable life. But his hopes are dashed when a mysterious confrontation between Laura and her father, shortly before the patriarch's death, results in her being disinherited. The newlyweds, disillusioned, travel to Venice to celebrate the New Year at the Palazzo Dioscuri, the ancestral home of a charming and treacherous count. A mist envelops the streets of the floating city and begins to cloud the husband's mind and morals as well, while Venice becomes the perfect stage for a master of shadows and innuendo like John Banville.
