Old Eguchi visits the House of the Sleeping Beauties for the first time, a true mystery. Its facade displays no signs, no identifying markers. There, shrouded in secrecy and concealment, the elderly couple spend the night with young, virginal girls, asleep under the influence of a powerful narcotic. What Eguchi soon learns, on his first visit to the inn, is that he shouldn't ask questions. Every question Eguchi keeps silent is a doubt that Kawabata leaves echoing in the reader's mind.
