In 19th-century Spain, science and technology ushered in a new era, while politics reinvented itself under the banner of liberalism. Against this backdrop emerged Práxedes Mateo Sagasta (1825–1903), a civil engineer and seven-time Prime Minister, a key figure in the construction of the parliamentary state. This book recounts how photography and politics converged to construct the image of power, from the solemn portrait to the approachable gesture of the modern leader. The volume brings together contributions from José Luis Ollero Vallés, Bernardo Riego Amézaga, José Félix Martos Causapé, and María Luisa Ruiz in a dialogue that unites history, technology, art, and communication. At its core is an ambitious research and recovery project of Sagasta's photographic corpus, featuring a unique gem: the technological reconstruction of the daguerreotype that the young Sagasta took around 1845, considered the oldest known political photograph in Spain.
