If there's one gaucho known throughout the world, it's Martín Fierro. Far fewer know his author, the young gentleman José Hernández, and often what they do know is far from the truth. In these pages, his character, Martín Fierro, tells us the life of his creator: Here I begin to tell the story I'd rather not: the story of that treacherous snake who, for telling a story, stole my memory, changed it completely. His name was José Hernández, though he was also called Pueyrredón, because he boasted of being a man of humble origins and was damned rich more than the Queen of Sheba. His family was one of those that plundered our lands: pampas, rivers, forests, mountains, they kept it all and just like that, they fenced it off to leave us out.
