The Mediterranean has become a threshold, a segment of the global border separating North from South, the world of the privileged from those who simply aspire to a dignified life. For millennia, the Mediterranean was a gateway, an opportunity that both united and divided its shores. Today, along with the border between Mexico and the United States, it is one of the two places where the contrast between these worlds manifests itself directly and dramatically. Egidio Ivetic invites us to understand how this sea, which should have been a space for encounter and a common market, has been transformed into a border of the European Union.
