In this first adventure—originally serialized in the children's supplement of the Belgian newspaper *Le Vingtième Siècle*—Hergé begins to draw the character who would become the most famous reporter of all time: Tintin. For his debut journey, the young reporter is sent to the Land of the Soviets, reflecting the newspaper's agenda of anti-communist propaganda—a stance Hergé would come to regret in later years. Upon his return from the former Soviet Union, Hergé was commissioned to send the young reporter to the Congo (then a Belgian colony); the resulting comic offers an excellent portrayal of how Europeans viewed Africa at the time. In the third adventure included in this volume, Tintin changes continents and travels to North America, where he must confront a ruthless Chicago gangster syndicate—including the infamous Al Capone. Hergé sought to showcase as much of America as possible, depicting diverse landscapes, major cities and industries, the Prohibition era, and the exploitation of Native Americans, while denouncing how they were driven from their lands following the discovery of oil. This is the first volume of a new commemorative edition that will collect all 24 comics comprising *The Adventures of Tintin* in a compact new format—ideal for discovering (or rediscovering) the intrepid adventures of the world's most famous reporter and his faithful dog. Nearly a century after their initial publication, Hergé remains a towering figure in European comics.
