Southwest China, 1990s. In a remote village in the mountains of Yunnan, Li Yan and her family lead a life defined by the changing seasons and tea cultivation. As members of the Akha people, they follow ancestral rituals passed down through generations; yet Li Yan—one of the few literate young women in the area—begins to question the customs that have always shaped her existence. When she becomes pregnant and realizes that tradition demands the sacrifice of children born out of wedlock, she flees, leaving her baby at the doorstep of an orphanage, wrapped in a blanket alongside a tea cake. While the mother leaves her past behind to pursue an education, start a business, and build a new life, her daughter, Haley, grows up in California, adopted by a loving family. Yet Haley constantly wonders about her origins, and on the other side of the world, Li Yan cannot forget the child she abandoned. Are they destined to reunite one day?
