Galdós dedicated himself to writing realistic novels, not inventing myths or legends. His characters are human, all too human; we see them with all their miseries and weaknesses, which are the miseries and weaknesses of Spanish society. For Galdós, any behavior, however deviant it might seem, was inherent to humankind, and that was enough to motivate him to strive to understand it.
